About Me

Dr. Pamela Young is the Director of Community Engagement and Economic Development in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama. In her role Dr. Young supports student retention and success leading community engaged scholarship, teaching and service learning initiatives with faculty, staff and students. She serves as the advisor for the A&S Student Ambassadors Leadership program, has taught a first year seminar, and works with employers to support student career development. She created a capacity building program for academic advisors and a new UA South Africa education abroad program on Leadership and Management Across Cultures. Dr. Young also created three new community engagement programs, Embrace Tuscaloosa, Engage Alabama and a Faculty Community Engagement Academy. An education specialist and experienced crisis manager, Dr. Young worked as a leader at international nonprofit organizations, an experience that took her to 60 countries across the globe to work with young people, parents, government leaders, universities, schools and community-based organizations to design and implement socio-economic development and humanitarian programs.
Dr. Young has managed large scale individual and donor funded projects, remote learning and been involved with research in the United States, Ghana, Kenya, Bangladesh, Niger, Tanzania, Indonesia and throughout the Caribbean. She has been involved in crisis management responses in the United States, Haiti, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Niger, and Tanzania. She is an active member of NASPA and IARSCLE. She serves as Knowledge Community Co-Coordinator for NASPA Region III having previously served as the Communications Coordinator for the NASPA Orientation, Transition and Retention Knowledge Community. Dr. Young was named to the Fulbright Specialist Roster in 2021. She has held progressive roles of responsibility in academia and large nonprofit organizations overseeing administrative, operational and organizational personnel management.
